Recently, I was searching for flights between YYZ and DEL. Just browsing to check on fare trends. What followed was a barrage of Stories on Facebook and Instagram. Meta didn't wait and made their algorithms pounce on my feeds.
The query triggered thirty-four ads! That too within less than 5 minutes.
It was fascinating, from WhatsApp CTAs, Senior Deals, local agents, to global airlines, from economy to business, everyone wanted me. And oddly enough, offers to visit Vancouver, Berlin, Paris and Iceland. I didn’t sign up for that!
They say the algorithm knows you better than you do. The moment a search is performed, your intent is flagged, scored and segmented. You’re now part of a high-intent audience segment with real-time bidding systems and advertisements competing to catch your attention.
Not all ads, however, were created equal.
🔥 Nailed It
- “$729 to Delhi – Nonstop” from FlightsExpertCA
- “40% off for Families – Book India Roundtrip Now” via WhatsApp
- Etihad with its polished, aspirational stopover messaging.
These were timely, relevant, and most importantly, actionable.
🤔 Mildly Relevant:
- KLM and Virgin Atlantic – Less common routes to India, but still global
- Amex CAD 100 travel credit – Not a flight, but loosely connected
💤 Total Misfires:
- Visit Berlin – Wrong continent, wrong timing
- Icelandair – Beautiful visuals, zero connection
- Seniors travel club – I’m flattered, but no thanks
Final Thoughts
We’re being watched in a real-time data monetization way. One click triggers a swarm of advertisers. That’s the game now.
So the next time you search for something online, just remember.
Someone’s already bought your attention.
